The Five Most Popular Teeth Whitening Treatments

Clean, white teeth and a perfect, radiant smile convey confidence and assert a positive first impression. There are several methods available for those looking to whiten their teeth and improve their smile; we rank the five most popular whitening treatments - from the most expensive to the most budget-friendly.

1) Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are another option. This procedure involves a light buffing of the enamel on the front surface of the tooth, onto which a custom-molded porcelain veneer is adhesively bonded. The translucent quality of the porcelain is extremely close to the surface of the actual teeth. It can be color matched and to complement the patient’s surrounding teeth. Porcelain veneers, in addition to its whitening possibilities, can also be used to reshape, resurface and lengthen teeth, or to fill in gaps and spaces between teeth.

2) Dental Bonding

Bonding is another option similar to porcelain veneers, wherein a composite resin is molded and bonded onto the tooth, thereby offering the ability to completely whiten and reshape the existing tooth. However, like the tooth itself, the material used in bonding is susceptible to staining and chipping.

3) Laser Tooth Whitening

Several tooth-whitening methods have been shown to be effective, but the quickest way for patients to brighten their teeth is with professional laser tooth whitening. Most of these in-office options contain some kind of peroxide as the active agent. Tooth bleaching can be performed to restore your tooth's surface to a bright white luster.

4) Professional At-Home Teeth Bleaching Kits

Men and women who don't want to pay for the more costly cosmetic dentistry treatments can try a home bleaching kit, many of which are only available through a dentist or certified pharmacist. These kits typically consisting of some type of bleaching gel or solution with a hydrogen peroxide base. The whitening material is applied to the enamel on the surface of the tooth, after which a mouth guard, usually included in the kit, is applied. Though they can be successful, the positive effects of these types of overnight treatments tend to last for a much shorter time, when compared to more extensive treatments performed by a dentist in an office.

5) Whitening Toothpastes

Another option for at home teeth whitening is use of whitening toothpastes, which polish teeth to keep them cleaner and employs use of a mild abrasive that removes stains.
